United States Economic Snapshot - November 2016

The United States economy is growing modestly and is consistent with a mature economic environment. Employment grew by 161,000 jobs in October, a 1.7 percent yearly growth rate. U.S. unemployment dipped slightly from September to 4.9 percent in October. Wages accelerated at the strongest rate they have seen since the recession, with average hourly wages increasing 2.8 percent from October 2015 to October 2016.

The Fed Decision

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) recently held their September monetary policy meeting to discuss, among other issues, the status of the Federal Funds Rate. After evaluating current economic conditions, the Committee decided to withhold from making a rate increase at this time, indicating, however, their goal to raise the target rate later this year. Despite acknowledging a healthy labor market and a strengthening domestic economy, the Fed ultimately decided to keep the target rate between 1/4 and 1/2 percent in anticipation of the economy continuing to improve, which would justify a gradual increase in the coming months.
